Someone else's presentation topic

Today in class I got the chance to present in front of the class, which is not a fun experience. My hands are still shacking from that experience. Also it didn't help that the last time I present in front of a class was back when I was in Junior year in high school.

So other than that experience, I learn a lot from my other classmates. There was a few presentation that stand out because they were just amazing. And there's me who almost forgot what to say in front of the class. Other than that,  I would like to talk about the most interesting presentation given in the class.

It was back on Monday were this one guy that told an interesting story. His topic was about cybersecurity. He when into detail in the first ever hack being recorded. Which was tapping into phone lines and making free calls. Seem harmless but over time people begin learn more how a system works and started to take advantage of it. I forgot what year it was but he talks about the time when the Melissa and the ILOVEYOU virus was rapid in people email account. Those bugs get into your contact list and start sending affected mail to other people. People thinks it you and the cycle starts over again. Their was more that he talk about but the general message was all of these attacks are for financial gain or to destroy a person reputation.

Moving along this student talk about the issue of cameras that could be easily be hack remotely. He told the class how easy it was to check in unsuspected people. Just go and check the dark web and you would be able to check someone across the country. The best way to defend yourself is to just cover up your camera on your laptop or just disconnect your webcam.

Overall I really like his presentation. It was informal, interesting, and he has a good personality. One last thing to mention was that the end of his presentation was that he plugging in a USB drive to the computer name "lol" and play a video.  On the screen it says "you just hack"  and a random guy just dancing to the beat.

What makes a community and dose Tech provide

In class last Thursday, we kind of just talk about how can a community be a community. For the most part everyone has a different view on how a community can be form. But the discussion was about if a community can be build in the internet and is it possible to have it similar to an actual community in real life

From my understand, a community is made when a divers group of people are living in regional area. Everyone has something in common, such as norms, values, identity. And for the most part, people are generally friendly to one and another and know each other a bit. You could see this similar to large family that sometimes says hello to you when you visit for the holidays. Then you got the town hall, elected leaders, public workers and workers with different skill sets. That's how I see a community is form.

So, dose tech world has anything like a community? well surprising yes,
The largest ones I know are the gamming community in MMO or Massively multiplayer online game. You have the popular games like World of Worldcraft, Overwatch, or any games that get people play together. Even for the games that don't have some type of chat room, people would go online and make a website to get people connected. This might sound funny but the game that I consider the most tightly knit community is League of legends. In this game people are group into teams that need to complete a task to beat the enemy team. I haven't play this game but the time my friends have talk about it. They go on and talk about the game nonstop. A little research on the game's website leads me to believe this is true. There are thousand of forums and many more stuff I need time to understand completely.

Its true that people in these gaming communities don't actually see each other but people have a good way to connect with each other. Another place that can be consider as a community is Facebook. know a days Facebook connects mostly everyone in your life. You can see them. have the option to talk to one another and much more.

So dose tech have a way to provide the same as a community. In my definition of a community its a yes.

Dot.Com to Dot.Bomb

Earlier this week our professor had given the class an interesting lecture about the rise and fall of the internet between the years 1994 and 2002. You could say this time was similar to the housing crash back in 2008 but with the internet. Also our Professor have live though this time so he has experience gain and lost during this time.

Starting with the beginning, the professor had broken up the event into five stages
  • An innocent beginning
  • Boom!!!
  • Insanity!!!
  • Bust!!!
  • The crawl back
At this time there were a few large company's that control much of the information online. They were Prodigy, CompuServe, GEnie, AOL, and Delphi. Most of their service was subscription base and being of a online community. For a while these five companies did very well till the year 1994. That's when free range media (AKA "The Web") have came around and completely changed everything.

In this time people are starting to learn how to publish things on the web and how to find information without paying for the subscription. Many new business had pop all around to set up new website for companies  These incould Netscape, Wired, Hotwired, MCL, and Gramercy Press. As a side note our professor had already left Microsoft to build his new company. In this time he partnered up with another company to build a new website for the NFL. Crazy huh 0_0

Anyway in 1996 their was a boom in the business. People had started to realize theirs a way to make money in the virtual world. In this time some well known companies have been form. Those included CompuServ, Thomas Target Media, Yahoo!, Amazon (still was a book store), and Usweb. Oh and another thing to add was that our professor had went to supper bowl xxx for working well on the NFL's webpage and his business was doing great.

Everything is doing well till 1997 came around. Our Professor has said that between 1997-2000 was the time when insanity was coming. This was the time when people were buying and selling stocks like crazy. All but one of the ancient companies had survived the new age of the internet, which was AOL. This company had become so large till the point it bought small companies left and right to become more larger. For our professor, he's  doing well in this time period. He even had dinner meeting with the people of WSA predictions to do some business.

With all of this happening, it can be describe as a bubble that is about to burst. There are many reason as to why a economy would collapse. But an easier way to explain the downfall was that too many people where inflating the price of stocks. It keep on going up and up and up and just crash. This happen in the year 2000. Many companies who have made a name of themselves have crashed and went out of business. Even well known companies like Microsoft have take a hit. There stocks when from $120 to just $60 in a couple of days. For the Professor, he lost some money during the bust of the internet.

It wasn't until 2002 and 2003 when the market was starting to rebound. Companies like AOL have become a part of Time Warner. Amazon.com post a profit even though many people believe it would fail. And our Professor is bouncing back.

Overall I consider this lecture very interesting. I have no clue this was happening when I was little. Probably because I was only 4 when all of this was happening but learning about the past is very interesting.

what are databases? Gest speaker Joel Larson

On Monday our Professor had invited a guest speaker to talk about databases. Usually he would of done the lecture himself, but this time its best to have an expert in the field to show the class "What is a database?".

Before continuing on, here is some background information on Joel Larson.
Larson is actually a Professor in the collage I'm in right now. If I remember correctly he's the professor for the second year students in technology base majors. And what he's teaches are the fundamentals of how databases work. Which help us a lot because some of us have many questions in hand.

So the first thing Professor Larson had talk about is knowing the basic of database and know why its invented in the first place. He explain to everyone that databases are a way to organize data so that anyone could jump in and find a relationship between two things. As shown below, this is what a databases would look like. Similar to a excel spreadsheet.

During the presentation I remember this one note. " Theirs a database for a databases to do it's task". What the professor had explain was that databases interconnect to on another to create this system. That is how people could find connection to stuff when using this system. From people's names connecting to their home directions, to their work place, and so on and so forth.

Moving on, what I like the most about the Professor's lecture was the examples of how this system have change the way we live. The first instance of databases have help people were the ones who work in groceries stores and retail. Before this came along, all groceries stores only have tags on the product and no bar codes. They have no way on telling on how much products they sold in a day or how much they lost from theft. Usually this left the stores in the dark because back then the manufactures would tell the store to buy this amount of products and the store couldn't say no. With the database, things had started to change. With the introduction of bar codes the store can link the number to the product and send the data to a computer. With this, stores are able to track what the consumer are buying and what not. Patters were form and stores could predict which items they should order more of and getting less items for orders. In a way this give the store more power because they know what the consumers are buying and the stores know how much they should order.

Other than that, database has been a part of our daily lives. From organizing your files on your computer to the google searches sending you links similar to your search topic. This is what I got from our gest speaker and it was great learning from Professor Larson.

Disintermediation of today

On 11/09/16, the Professor was showing us a quick history of how people used to buy stuff in the stores and then how the internet has change everything.

About 20 years ago which is not a long time ago, people who want something would just run down to a part of town where a lot of small business would be found. This was the time when big box stores weren't around and Amazon was still a book store. But when the internet was introduce in 1994, thing had change dramatically. People are starting to learn that it was cheaper to buy things on the internet. You could just bypass the middle man and get items that you would normally not see in your local town. This was called Disintermediation. Buying directly from the producer.

With the new changes, it may seam great to get your favorite items for less and have them deliver right to your front step. But here's the catch. A lot of people have loss their job because nobody want to buy from them or used their service. It was more convenient to just buy stuff with the click of the button. Some of the jobs that got affected are travel agents, tax preparers, bank tellers, book retailing, and postal service. Even well know business got affected. Stores like Sears and Barns and Nobel's were once "the" stores to get your stuff. Now you don't hear them as much.

With these changes you might be wondering what happen to the people who lost their job. Well the answer is, they have to adapt to the new work force. After searching online for awhile, their is not a great answer to the people who lost their jobs. Usually they need to look for a job that is similar to there own skill set. Like a bank tellers go into accounting for a business or a librarian becoming a educator.  If that doesn't work, most of the time people would have to retrain themselves to find a new job. For the people who were in a union before losing their job, they had it a bit more easier time because the union would of help them on finding a new job.

Well that all that I could find about "where did the people go to work" after the introduction of the internet. It was very interesting for the lack of information from google and Bing. Anyway that all for today.

3 things i would not buy from the internet

Its likely that everyone had bought something from the web at some point in their lives. Whether its from a well known website like Amazon or to the shady ads on multiple websites that promise you a designer somethings for 90% off. For today I wanted to talk about stuff that you should not buy from the internet. Its not like you can't get the stuff anyway but these are 3 things that I believe you should buy it in person.

1. Clothing
Clothes are one of though things that is needed to see in person. I've don't have personal experience with this subject but I see the struggle that my sisters have gone through when they get something from the web. When they found something they would wonder if the clothes would fit on them. My sisters would spend a lot of time with the measuring tape and looking at other people wearing the same clothes. By the time the clothes came to the door two days latter, they look cheaply made and not look like the same clothing in the web page.

2. Food
Unless the company is well known, food is better to get in the store than online. Sure in some websites they provide a discount for buying a certain quantity of food but its better to find deals in store ads and pick up the food yourself. Most of the time you don't even know if the food your getting would be fresh or food that spend too much time in the frigid. Its not that hard to go to the store and picking up some fresh groceries. Plus while going to the store you could get coupons and save more your favorite snacks.

3. Houses
I was actually surprise to discovered that you could buy a house on the internet. While talking about possible topics to blog about in class. A student had say she and her partner had bought a house on the internet. They did check on the floor plan and have a inspector come and see the house out. But the thing is they didn't check out the house out themselves till they were just moving in. For me, buying a house is too risky to get on the internet. Their is too many things that could go wrong and its best to check the property out yourself.

All in all these are the top 3 things that I would be worry about when buying on the internet. Their are other things that do worry me a bit but if I continued this list. It would be a top 10 list.

Well have a good day everyone :)

Gest speeker Erik Hanbery

Hi everyone, David Here

I probably should have done this post back on Monday to have a fresh memory of what did Hanbery talk about. But good thing I have a page full of random notes of what happen on that day.

Anyways Erik Hanbery was an interesting man who had done a lot in his life. When he was a collage student working at the student center. He convince the school to make them a new webpage and got paid for it. Even though it was his first time making a website. Hanbery have actually wrote books and self publish them. And has done many jobs including acting to working in the Metro parks in W.A (sadly that's all the jobs I could remember). Other than talking about himself, his speech was about how to put yourself on the internet and such. Hanbery had talk about a time when he fist made a book and stared to publish it on his own. He was clever on using a system which he print on demand for his book. Not on having a garage full of unsold books. He then went on about how eBooks were starting to catch on and how Amazon Bookstore was helping self publishers be out there in the web. Even though it seem great to be able to publish anything on the web and it seem easy. Their something that everyone needs to know about. Putting it out there is a emotional toll for anyone when they get bad review on their projects. Plus it can be hard to come back once the public marks you as a failure. These are the things people need to think about when publishing stuff on the internet.

Well that all what I remember from Hanbery speech. I know I might of left off some important detail  but its been five days and I don't even remember what I got for breakfast today. Anyway that is all.
